The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

Rwandans are mostly Christian, and about 44 percent of them are Roman Catholic. All Catholics celebrate this holiday, which is a holy day of obligation. That means you are required by the church to attend mass on this day. And many do, making the Catholic churches in Rwanda quite full “on the ides of August”.

The idea behind Assumption Day is the belief that Mary the mother of Jesus had her body, and soul, miraculously taken up to heaven by God. This prevented her body from decomposing as with others who die. There is a debate within Catholicism as to whether Mary died and was then assumed or was simply assumed. Some even say she died, was resurrected, and then taken up.
