The Islamic Republic of Mauritania currently celebrates 8 national holidays each year. National holidays are regulated by the Labour Code of 2004 which was later amended in 2007 when authority was given to the government to declare additional national holidays.

Many of the holidays celebrated in Mauritania are based on the Muslim faith. Some of these holidays change in dates each year because they are celebrated on dates based on the lunar cycle. The government requires all businesses to acknowledge these holidays, regardless of the dates on which they occur.

It should also be noted that the recent government has made proclamations each year for the last five years to extend two of the holidays celebrated each year by one additional day. This announcement is made at the end of each year for the following year.
