Ascension Day is a holiday in Benin to commemorate Jesus Christ’s ascension to heaven as recorded in the Bible. It is observed on the fortieth day of Easter – 39 days after Easter Sunday – and always fall on a Thursday.

Many in Benin attend church or mass for Ascension Day or mention the Ascension in a church service on the Sunday nearest Ascension Day. Many families enjoy a day together at home since people may be off work and out of school.
The Biblical account of the Ascension of Christ is found in Mathew 28, Luke 24, Mark 16, and Acts Chapter One. After the Resurrection, Christ appeared to many on several occasions and continued to instruct his disciples. When He ascended on high, He gave the Great Commission to evangelise the world.
Pentecost falls 10 days after Ascension Day, and Ascension Day normally comes sometime in the month of May.
