The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

Roman Catholics in Benin will attend a special mass to the Virgin Mary on this day. They believe that Mary died and her body, along with her soul, was taken up to Heaven so that it saw no decay in the grave.

Most people get the day off regardless of their religious affiliation, however. And you will see people out at the beach or out for a walk to enjoy the summer weather and scenery.
