Around 99 percent of residents of Comoros are Sunni Muslims, so it is not surprising that major Islamic holidays like Ide el Fitr are on the official holidays calendar. Christian holidays are there too due to the influence of French Catholics from colonial times on.

Ide el Fitr means the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”, referring to the fast of Ramadan which immediately precedes. It is one of the two big “Ides” of the Muslim faith, the other one being Ide el Adha, meaning “Feast of the Sacrifice”.

Ide el Fitr is a sudden outburst of jubilation after a long, difficult fasting month. Ramadan expresses the rigors of Islam while Ide el Fitr is meant to express its more celebratory side. Ide is a time for eating lots of food, being merry, and being generous to your poorer neighbours.
