The date of the holiday changes each year based on the centuries-old calculations that determine the Christian Ecclesiastical Calendar, such that the date of Easter Sunday can be anytime between 22 March and 25 April.

In Eswatini, Easter retains a highly religious atmosphere and focus instead of the commercialisation and attention given to the Easter Bunny and chocolate eggs in many other nations.

Around 80 percent of Eswatini’s population is Christian, with over half of that being Protestant. Only around six percent are Roman Catholic. This means there is a heavy influence from Protestant, and especially Anglican and Evangelical, traditions in how Easter is kept in the country.

It is common for Eswatini believers to get up as early as 3am and walk several miles to church for a sunrise Easter service. This service focuses on what the Bible records of Christ’s Resurrection and its practical meaning for the present and future lives of those He came to redeem.
