Upon the death of Kenyatta in 1978, Moi became interim president, then head of Kenyatta’s party, the Kenya African National Union, and then simply president. He was unopposed in 1978 and won elections for president in 1992 and 1997. He was barred from running again for president, however, in 2002.

Moi promoted a special blend of policies and attitudes called “Nyayo” during his time in office, which were supposed to bring peace and unity throughout Kenya. He often travelled around the country and conversed with the people to gain their perspective, and he is still very popular in Kenya even today.

Kenya’s parliament removed Moi Day in 2010, but that decision was reversed by a judicial decision of Kenya’s Supreme Court in 2017. The basis of the decision was that parliament violated the Employment Act and deprived workers of their full off-days.
