Africa Day 2025, 2026 and 2027 in Mauritania
Africa Day comes on 25 May and is a public holiday in Mauritania as it is in a handful of other African nations. It is meant to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on that date in 1963, and for that reason, it’s full name is African Unity Day.

Mauritania holds to the ideals of African liberation and cooperation. The colonial era is over, and so half of the equation has been fulfilled. But tyrannical regimes and bitter wars and ethnic conflicts continue throughout the continent. Mauritania has certainly not been exempt from such conflicts and is one of the few places on Earth where actual slavery and a slave trade continue clandestinely in modern times.
The goals of the African Union, the new name for the OAU, are dear to many Mauritanians. And they take time every 25 May to remember the successful struggle against colonialism and the ongoing struggle for greater African unity and peace.
