FRELIMO was formed on 25 June 1962, when three existing independence groups joined together to form a united front against Portugal. The official founding took place in neighbouring Tanzania, in the city of Dar es Salaam.
It was only two years later, on 25 September 1964, however, that the first armed conflict between FRELIMO and Portugal took place. Thus, Armed Forces Day looks back to the beginning of the revolution against the Portuguese.
Armed Forces Day is a major patriotic holiday in Mozambique, much loved by the people.
