This is a religious holiday of the Christian faith, but even those who are not Christian still appreciate the day off work. Many will get outside for a picnic or a walk on Ascension Day or enjoy a family feast even if they don’t go to church.
Those who do attend services may witness the putting out of the Paschal candle that has burned since Easter. They are likely also to hear a sermon on the circumstances of Jesus’ ascent to the heavens and its meaning to us today.
The devout may have been fasting and praying for three days, on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday preceding Ascension Thursday. They will be ready by then to listen attentively to the teaching on why Jesus’ Ascension is so important.
