New Year’s Day 2026 and 2027 in Saint Helena

Saint Helena celebrates New Year’s Day with a public holiday every 1 January, as does most of the rest of the world. However, the celebrations really begin on New Year’s Eve and reach a high point with the turning of the clock from 11:59pm on 31 December to midnight on 1 January.

New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family.

Saint Helena is the location where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled following his final defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. He had been used to elaborate New Year’s celebrations in France, and he spent his final New Year holidays in Saint Helena with a lot less fanfare.

However, the people of Saint Helena really do up New Year’s right. They indulge in delicious dinners of “comfort food”, especially local seafood and other signature dishes. There are fireworks displays, family get-togethers, and other festive events.

Saint Helena has developed its own unique culture over the years due to its extreme isolation. And its culture is on full display every New Year’s Eve and Day.
