New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family.
The president of Sierra Leone usually gives a traditional New Year presidential address. He reviews the progress made in the previous year and expresses his plans and hopes of how the remaining challenges can be tackled in the year ahead.
There are large fireworks displays and elaborate celebrations on New Year’s Eve in some of the big cities and in resorts and expensive hotels in Sierra Leone. But most people hold simpler events. They attend parties, in homes in the streets. They eat their fill of New Year’s food, listen to music, dance, and catch up with friends and relatives they may not have seen for some time.
