The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

About 28 percent of Togolese are Roman Catholic and only nine percent Protestant. There are many Muslims and Animists in Togo as well. So not everyone celebrates this holiday, but those who do tend to see it as a very important one.

Catholics believe that Mary was taken up, or “assumed”, into heaven. Most say she died first but not because of sin since she had none. However, the Catholic Church has not pronounced on whether or not she died but only on that she was assumed.
