In Uganda, government buildings and schools shut down for New Year’s Day, but private businesses often remain open. In the past, many businesses would close down for New Year’s, but those days are mostly gone now.
What you will find going on is people staying up late, waiting for the stroke of midnight, either at home, the home of a friend, or even out and about. The moment Uganda and the world move from 31 December to 1 January, shouting, singing, drumming, and fireworks all suddenly explode.
One of the best fireworks displays in Uganda is found in Kampala at The Sheraton Hotel. But there are fireworks and celebrating all over the country.
Many churches will hold mass meetings in stadiums and parks they have rented for the occasion as well. You may find prayer and praise services going on for 24 hours straight on New Year’s Eve and Day in Uganda. So the celebrating is very mixed: cultural, religious, and pure entertainment motives all coincide.
