Mouloud 2026, 2027 and 2028 in Djibouti

Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is commemorated by Muslims in Djibouti on 12 Rabi’ al-awwal of the Islamic calendar. As in most other predominantly Muslim countries, Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday is a much celebrated national holiday here. Known as Mouloud, it is one of the highlights of the year for many of this tiny nation’s million or so residents.

In 2026, Mouloud falls on Tuesday 25 August. The holiday will be on Saturday 14 August in 2027.

To celebrate, there may be street processions, decorations put on homes, businesses, and mosques, and mass religious gatherings. There is a dispute among Muslims over whether birthday celebrations are appropriate, but the vast majority in Djibouti reckon that they are and celebrate the “Mawlid“, or “birth anniversary“, of Muhammad with great vigour.

Some of the main traditions associated with Prophet’s Birthday are enjoying a large family dinner, giving food gifts to the poor, reading stories of Muhammad’s life to children, and reciting poems of praise for Muhammad’s teachings and character.
