New Year’s Day 2026 and 2027 in Algeria

Algeria follows the Islamic Calendar for religious and cultural purposes, however it also makes use of the Gregorian Calendar. And 1 January, New Year’s Day on the Gregorian Calendar, is therefore a public holiday in Algeria.

Insofar as Algerians celebrate 1 January, they do it much like it’s done in the west, with fireworks, family get togethers and merrymaking.

Much of this activity tends to centre in the big cities and at hotels and other locations where Western tourists will be present, however.

However, in many parts of Algeria where Berbers live, New Year’s Day is celebrated in mid-January instead, to coincide with their own native Amazigh (Berber) agricultural-based new year’s day.
