The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

Interestingly, Burundi also celebrates Ascension Day to remember the ascension of Christ to Heaven. Catholics often use the word “ascended” to mean go up by one’s own power but “assumed” to mean go up by the power of another. Thus, they say Jesus ascended into Heaven but Mary was assumed, taken up, to Heaven by God.

Note that the main point of the doctrine of the assumption of Mary is to assert that her physical body did not see corruption in the grave and is no longer with us on Earth today.
