Ascension Day in Gabon is sometimes called “Holy Thursday” but should not be confused with the Holy Thursday three days before Easter.
Some churches celebrate Ascension Day on the Sunday after its actual occurrence since more people are likely to attend a Sunday service than one mid-week. Other churches indeed have church on Thursday.
Roman Catholics in Gabon often consider the three days leading up to Ascension Day as special times of fasting and prayer. They may pray to the saints for protection this time of year. Many local churches will also have processions on Ascension Day. The period between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Monday is also a time of prayer and fasting to some.
