Note: Africa Unity Day is a Commemorative Day, hence they are not observed as public holidays.

During the 1960s and beyond, many African states began clamouring for self-rule. This led to the rapid end of European colonial control over most of African within a few decades. In conjunction with this newfound freedom, African nations made an effort to cooperate with each other for their mutual protection and advancement. That is what Africa Unity Day is all about.

Ghana has a special relationship with Africa Unity Day because it was Ghana’s independence in 1957 that inspired many other Subsaharan African colonies to seek independence as well.
