Easter 2020 and 2021 in Malawi
Easter is regarded as the most important of Christian holy days, and Easter in Malawi is celebrated with two holidays – on Good Friday and the day after Easter Sunday.
| Year | Date | Day | Holiday |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 10 Apr | Fri | Good Friday |
| 13 Apr | Mon | Easter Monday | |
| 2021 | 2 Apr | Fri | Good Friday |
| 5 Apr | Mon | Easter Monday |
The date of Easter changes each year based on the centuries-old calculations that determine the Christian Ecclesiastical Calendar. This means that the date of Easter Sunday can be anytime between 22 March and 25 April.
Eighty percent of the population of Malawi is Christian, and the four-day weekend is thus an important time in most communities across the country.
People use the four days to attend multi-day church services and to visit family and friends they may not have seen for awhile. Catholics often take part in Stations of the Cross processions on Good Friday, while many denominations hold crusades and revivals.
Services include preaching by guest speakers, prayer, singing, dancing, and mini-dramas. Afterwards, everyone joins together to enjoy a big meal and to converse about the events of the day.
