The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

As Mayotte is an overseas department of France, it shares most of the same holidays that mainland France celebrates.

There may be local village and church festivals for Assumption Day or even small parades, sports matches, and other events. The main event, however, is simply attending a special mass dedicated to the Virgin Mary and her being taken up to Heaven.

Many from France and other countries flock to Mayotte on or around Assumption Day for short vacations. Locals, too, may go on mini-vacations this time of year or at least get out of the house and do something special.

The beaches tend to be crowded this time of year as people get out to enjoy the summer sun, the sandy shores, and the turquoise waters surrounding Mayotte’s islands. Many also have special family or communal dinners in remembrance of Mary’s assumption.
