The date of the holiday changes each year based on the centuries-old calculations that determine the Christian Ecclesiastical Calendar, such that the date of Easter Sunday can be anytime between 22 March and 25 April.

Some ninety-seven percent of the Mayotte population is Muslim, with the remaining three percent being mostly Roman Catholic. Nevertheless, Easter is a significant time of year here.

In Mayotte, Easter Monday is an official holiday and is taken off work along with Easter Sunday by many. This creates a three-day weekend and makes for a good chance to get away to any of Mayotte’s many beautiful beaches or to go on other family mini-vacations.

Late on the Saturday before Easter, many devout Catholics attend midnight mass, where they await the dawning of Easter Sunday. After more church services on Sunday, they then typically enjoy a sumptuous family meal.
