National Day is also called Bastille Day since it commemorates the famed charging of the Bastille prison in Paris at the onset of the French Revolution. This is basically an extra day off work for many, and you might see a parade, fireworks, sales events, and family gatherings and feasts.
The majority of people in Mayotte are not French ethnically, but are of Malagasy ethnicity and Sunni Muslim in religion. The fact that Mayotte is some 10 times more prosperous economically than other parts of the Comoros Islands is seen as tied to their relationship to France. And that’s not something anyone is likely to want to change for the foreseeable future.
