Although the armed forces of São Tomé and Príncipe are the smallest in all of Africa, the military parades through the streets of the capital of the country, the city called São Tomé, are colourful, fully representative of the nation’s military repertoire, and met with an enthusiastic response from locals each year.
In the past, São Tomé and Príncipe has suffered at the hands of its own military due to the frequent coups and coup attempts, but there are efforts underway to bring the armed forces more fully under civilian control.
Even though there have been problems with their nation’s armed forces in the past, the people of São Tomé and Príncipe still appreciate the security they provide and honour their service every 6 September by celebrating Armed Force Day.
