Zimbabwe celebrates Defence Forces Day, also sometimes called “Armed Forces Day”, every August. This is the day when people all over the country honour the nation’s defence forces, consisting of both the army and the police.

Defence Forces Day opens up with a stirring patriotic speech, followed by a flag-raising ceremony and a grand parade. And after the Defence Forces Day parade, the official “flame of independence” is lit, symbolising the undying freedom of the Republic of Zimbabwe. And the national anthem, Blessed is the Land of Zimbabwe, is also much sung at this time of year.
