The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

Most in Burkina Faso are Muslim, but around 25 percent are Christian and 20 percent specifically Roman Catholic. That means Assumption Day is significant to at least one-fifth of the people of Burkina Faso.

The churches will generally be full on this day as people come to honour the Virgin Mary. This is a “holy day of obligation” for Catholics, which means they are supposed to attend mass. And it is considered by many to be the most important of all Mary-related holidays.
