The Republic Cote d’Ivoire currently celebrates 14 national holidays. The government of the Ivory Coast is also known to add one-time holiday events throughout the year. Employers are required to acknowledge these one-time holidays, even if they are given with short notice.
The holidays of the Ivory Coast are governed by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the President and the Labour Code. The president retains the right to add or remove any national holiday through national decree and publication.
Holidays in the Ivory Coast that fall on a Sunday are recognised and celebrated on the following Monday. Many of the holidays celebrated in the Ivory Coast are based on religious beliefs. Several of these holidays will change their dates of celebration each year because their dates are based on the lunar calendar. The government of the Ivory Coast requires all businesses to acknowledge these changes in date each year.
Some of the holidays are celebrated as a multi-day event. Businesses are encouraged to make the proper arrangements for employees to be off during these celebrations.
The Labour Code of the Ivory Coast provides all employees who work full time and have been with their employer for more than 90 days paid days off for national holidays. Employee who must work during a holiday celebration due to the nature of their work must be compensated with additional pay or a different paid day off in lieu of the holiday.
It should be noted that in recent years the government has begun to add two random holidays throughout the year as national days of rest. When and if these holidays occur are unknown until they are officially published. These holidays are not on any official list and may or may not occur.
